Literal Translation, Free Translation and Their Application to Chinese Translation of English Advertisements
Abstract

Translation is a practice which uses target language to express the idea, content and style of source language. Literal translation and free translation are two basic methods of translation. Literal translation is a good choice to translate lively and closely as the original. It retains the idea, style and rhetoric of the original. Free translation needn’t pay more attention to the form of the original and the details, but it should accord with target language’s culture and custom. Literal translation and free translation are not repulsive; on the contrary, they are complementary. Literal translation retains the rhetoric of the original, so it is lively as the original. But free translation can take advantages of the target language and make the translated language more idiomatic and acceptable. In this thesis, the difference between literal translation and free translation is discussed. Many typical advertisements will be taken for example to examine the application of literal translation and free translation to Chinese translation of English advertisements.

摘  要

翻譯是1種使用目標語言去表達源語言思想,內容,風格的實踐。直譯和意譯是最基本的兩種翻譯方法。直譯是1種較生動地接近源語言的翻譯的好選擇,它保留了源語言的思想,寫作風格和修辭方法。意譯不需太注重源語言的結構與細節,但它必須符合目標語言的.文化和習慣。直譯和意譯2者之間不是相互對立的, 相反, 它們是相輔相成的。直譯保留了源語言的修辭方法,所以它能和源語言1樣生動。但是意譯能吸收目標語言的優點,使被譯的語言能更符合當地語言的習慣且具有可接受性。論文中,本人將討論直譯和逐字翻譯的區別以及直譯和意譯的關係, 也將用大量的例子去討論直譯和意譯在英語廣告漢譯中的應用。
