Cover Letter原意為自薦信、求職信，是附於簡歷一道，遞交給用人單位看的。主要作用是羅列求職信封裡所包含的材料清單、並向用人單位做一個簡短的自我引薦。
求學如求職，Cover Letter的`功用也如求知中的自薦信一樣，隨打包材料一道寄送給學校招生辦。主要作用如下：

簡單自我介紹
本科申請不建議做自我引薦，簡單一兩句話說明自己是誰就可以;研究生申請，可以做一個簡要自我引薦，但其實也無必要，Cover Letter最好不要超過1頁。
