Translation Strategies as Seen from the Two English Versions of Honglou Meng by the Yangs and Hawkes
Abstract
Approaches to cultures involved in translation may be divided into two types: SL culture oriented foreignization and TL culture oriented domestication. Through a comparative study of cultural information translation of the classical Chinese novel, A Dream of Red Mansions, this thesis analyses the use of these two translation methods and the different effects they make on the TL culture and the TL readers, based on the two versions by Yang Xianyi and David Hawkes respectively. The author concludes that the strategy of foreignization works better for effectively preserving and dissimilating the source language cultural peculiarity and heritage to the target reader.

摘 要
翻譯實質是不同文化間的交流。翻譯中對文化因素的處理1般分為主要以源語文化為歸宿的'“異化”和主要以目的語文化為歸宿的“歸化”。本文通過對中國古典名著《紅樓夢》兩個英譯本的比較,分析評述了楊憲益和霍克斯兩位譯者在傳遞不同背景的文化資訊方面所採取的歸化或異化的翻譯策略和方法，以及由此對讀者所產生的效果和在目的語文化中所起的作用的不同。本文認為異化策略在儲存源語文化特色和傳播源語文化遺產方面顯得更為有效。
