The Relationship Between Metaphor and Polysemy
Abstract
In traditional view, metaphor is used for some artistic and rhetorical purpose. In the cognitive view, metaphor is powerful cognitive tools for our conceptualization of abstract categories. Polysemy in English language is a process from a base meaning to other by cognitive tool of human beings. This thesis studies the semantic extension of polysemy, and finds that polysemy is the process of the extension to the other senses from the core by the means of cognitive principles, such as metaphor, which reinforces that polysemy is well motivated. Besides, this thesis will analyze the implications of metaphor applied in language learning and e are other areas in language learning and teaching where metaphor have some different processes, such as polysemy. In the end, This paper applies prepositions are taken for example to illustrate that meatphor is quite forceful in explaning why and how an individual Word can express a multitude of related meanings. This study will help to deepen vocabulary understanding and memorizing.

摘 要
傳統理論認為隱喻的主要功能是1種語言修辭手段，而認知語言學學觀點認為隱喻更重要的是1種思維方式和認知世界的途徑，英語中的1詞多義現象就是人類通過認知手段由1個詞的中心意義或基本意義向其他意義延伸。本文從多義詞的.語義拓展進行研究，認為多義詞是通過人類認知手段—隱喻，由1個詞的基本意向其他意義拓展的過程，形成了1條由典型意義為中心向外擴充套件的語義鏈，進1步證實了詞義的擴充套件不是任意的，詞義之間存在1定的關聯性。此外，本文還對隱喻在外語教學中的應用進行分析，在英語教學中，隱喻會產生1些不同的變化，比如說：1詞多義。在這裡，本文以介詞為例子有力地說明了如何或怎樣利用隱喻把1個單個的單詞意思表達成多個相關的意思, 以此來提高對詞彙的理解和記憶。
